Why Choose Almuminum Bottles?

In recent years and decades it has come to light that plastic bottles and containers could be causing us to have health problems. Certain types of plastic containers can leech a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA). The chemical can mimic the female hormone estrogen. Given to animals at high doses it can cause all sorts of health problems ranging from infertility and obesity to several types of cancer.

Based on a recent report published by the CDC, there is no question that Americans are exposed to the chemical. A study by the CDC estimated that 92.6 percent of Americans age 6 and above had measurable BPA in their bodies. View the information at this site http://cdc.gov/exposurereport/environmental_phenols1.htm.

Earlier this year, the National Toxicology Program, a division of the National Institutes of Health issued an alarm. The agency said there was a possibility BPA could be causing brain problems in fetuses and children and prostate and breast problems in adults.

Here is an actual quote from the report “there is some concern for neural and behavioral effects in fetuses, infants, and children at current human exposures. The NTP also has some concern for bisphenol A exposure in these populations based on effects in the prostate gland, mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females.” The report states that the designation of “some” concern is equivalent to 3on a danger scale of 1 to 5. You can see the report itself here. A copy of the study can be seen at this site http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/media/questions/sya-bpa.cfm

A few members of Congress have issued calls for the FDA to ban the plastics. So far the FDA has not responded.

So what can you do to protect yourself and your family. Of course, based on the study, you need to avoid drinking liquids from plastic bottles. Luckily, there is an alternative to plastic drinking bottles. Aluminum water bottles. Aluminum water bottles are safe, easy to clean, and give you fresh tasting water in a reusable and recyclable bottle.

Pal's Cancer Story

The bottle above shows our new "Pal" bottle design. We named this bottle "Pal" after our grandmother. She was a woman who suffered and died from breast cancer. She lived in a time when it was taboo to talk about her illness, and she was forced to suffer in silence. Here is her life story, told here in the words of her daughter.

Palmyre Anne Martin Arceneaux She was born in 1907 on her parents farm along Bayou Cinclair, in rural Lafayette Parish in Lafayette, Louisiana. She was was born into a very large family. She married Benjamin Arceneaux and moved to into the town of Lafayette. Here they raised a family of two boys and a girl. 'Pal', as she was affectionately known, a devout Catholic, was active in her church. Yearly, she had a row of gladiola flowers growing in her yard so she could arrange and place them on the altar for Sunday Mass. She kept a tidy house and yard, served healthy meals, lived a healthy lifestyle, and never smoked or used tobacco of any kind. Ben, her husband, smoked all of their married life and did not have any health issues. Pal died in 1962 of breast cancer at age 55yrs. Information of her illness is sketchy because at that time, cancer was not discussed openly as it was not understood, and kept hidden, as a possible shameful thing to have.

Palmyre had surgery four or five times to remove the cancer. She developed mets to her intestine. At that time, children were not allowed in hospitals, so the Pal's children waited together at home until Ben drove there to tell them the results of the surgery.

"They got it all" was the result every time, referring to the cancer. "They got it all".

At the time of Palmyre's death, an autopsy was performed. This too was a 'hush-hush' subject. The family Doctor came to the house to report the results of the autopsy. He described in detail how the cancer spread and had choked off the urinary tract and urine had backed into her kidneys, causing her death.

The discussion was then what to write on her death certificate as the cause of death. Urimic poisioning was listed as the cause of death and all were instructed to say that urimic poisioning was her cause of death and never to mention breast cancer to anyone.

As bad as it seemed at the time, there is some consolation now in knowing that cancer was her cause of death. Had Palmyre had the diagnostics of today, resulting in early detection, she would have been with her family for a longer time. She did not live to see any of her grandchildren. The three children born to Pal are still living, along with ten grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Knowledge is very important for the gererations following Palmyre and your purchase of the Pal bottle will help educate generations to come.

10% of your purchase will be donated to breast cancer research. Pal's memory lives on in the hearts and minds of those who loved, knew of her, and her story.

As with all of our products, they can be customized with names, sayings, and pictures. Please visit our site and show your support with our safe and colorful aluminum water bottles.

Breast Cancer Items

Coco Mason Designs has recently added a line of Breast Cancer items. I have always been a participant in Susan Komen Cancer Runs. I have plenty of pink ribbon items and have come to realize that I'm seeing the same basic designs almost everywhere. I came up with these designs because I wanted to see some fresh new designs to use to promote breast cancer awareness. My sister and I discovered the walking/running ribbon and decidedly named her Pal after our late grandmother Palymere. See her story and her bottle.... http://www.cocomason.com/gopink.html My sisters and I feel that even if we don't sell one bottle (of course we have sold many) It was worth it. We got to hear our grandmother's story as told by our mother. These bottles can be customized with the name of your loved one to show them that you are supporting them. Please share your story with us...

Welcome!

Welcome to the Coco Mason Designs Blog! I am very excited to share my ideas and projects with everyone. Let me tell you a little about us. I run Coco Mason Designs from my design studio (The Third Bedroom). I began this venture when I had my son who was born a year ago. That's when I reduced my hours to two shifts a week. I work at a large hospital as a nurse in the trauma unit. It is very interesting although intense job. I know it seems like a dramatic contrast from the creative design process at Coco Mason, but it works for me! I work 12 hour night shifts and so does my husband. This allows us to work our schedule around our son, one of us is always home. No day-care yea! I also found some extra time on my hands. Along with a swift push from my folks, this is what lead me to where I am now. Running my own small business! We can print almost anything! T-Shirts, mouse pads, mugs, bottles, clipboards, can coolers, this list goes on and on!

Currently, I am excited to offer my aluminum water bottles! There has been so much buzz about them lately. I really love printing these bottles. They look fantastic! They are by far my favorite item to print and the most popular item we sell!
